Overview
During Interaction Design studies, we had the privilege to work with City of Tallinn, supporting their efforts in realizing wider and more comprehensive use cases for Digital Twin technology.
Problem
The Baltic Sea is an integral part of Tallinn's history, culture and economy. It has potential to shape the city’s lifestyle, traditions, and environment. Despite its proximity, some Tallinn residents feel a disconnection from the sea. Through research and interviews, the main reasons behind feeling disconnected from the Baltic Sea were discovered - historical, physical and emotional.
Solution
The proposal is a blend of physical and digital experience, a Digital Twin technology leveraging application that uses storytelling to bring Tallinners closer to the Baltic Sea, with the intention of improving mental health, encouraging physical activity, and supporting a sense of belonging.
Research
The work started as a big group, in which the whole class researched the topic through desk research, competitor and market analysis, interviews with different stakeholders, finding future and weak signals, and finally synthesizing and presenting the findings to our client.
Concept
The proposal is a blend of physical and digital experience - Digital Twin technology leveraging application that uses storytelling to bring the Baltic Sea closer to Tallinners. Storytelling was chosen as an appropriate tool, since interviewees in the project were eager to share and listen to stories relating to the sea.
A blend of physical and digital experience - Meribox is an app that shares simulated Sea related stories from the future, or fetch real ones from the past, to foster and rekindle an emotional connection with the people of Tallinn and the sea.

Reflections
The design process we relied upon was the Double Diamond approach, with most of the emphasis on the first half, phases that I would call emphasizing and understanding users’ true needs. This part of the design process was very crucial for me to develop, as it creates a solid foundation for all future learnings as a designer. The fact that the research and interviews were mostly done as a big group, really set us up for success when we were refining our individual design proposals. For that I am very thankful for my classmates.
What I took away from this intensive and challenging project, with its fast pace and complex subject matter, is that I feel alive and thrive when I listen to people and uncover their sometimes hidden needs. Every person has a unique story to tell and unique needs to be met, if only someone would listen and make it happen. I want to be the one who listens and makes things happen.
